I love technology, especially when I discover a free online app that enables me to do the impossible — create an animated cartoon video.
I always wanted to make one of those awesome greeter videos for Stafflink’s home page. But I didn’t have the skills or tools to accomplish it. Until I discovered Powtoon.com.
In one short weekend Powtoon allowed me to create an animated cartoon video even though I’m not an animator or a cartoonist.
I’m excited to share my video because I had so much fun making it. But first, you may be wondering, why would hiring managers, recruiters and IT job seekers want to make a cartoon video?
Cartoon Video Cover Letter
As a web developer/blogger, if I was looking for a job I would definitely create Powtoon video to show my stuff. I’d attach it to job applications along with my resume. I’d share it on LinkedIn and add it to my profile. I’d tweet it.
What a great way to make my job application stand out and compete with all of the other people applying for the same job.
Employee Value Proposition
As a hiring manager I would create a Powtoon video to present my company’s Employee Value Proposition to potential candidates.
Imagine two minutes of animated fun demonstrating how cool it is to work for your company.
- Share it with job candidates when you email them about job opportunities
- Add it to your corporate job board as a greeter video
- Link it to job descriptions
It just might tip the scale in your favour if an employee is choosing between muliple job offers.
My first Powtoon video
Here’s a 2 minute long greeter video I made with Powtoon to show Stafflink’s value proposition for our clients:
You can make your own PowToon video for free
I’m not an affiliate for PowToon, just a fan. I’m happy to tell you that they have a free option that allows you to make videos up to 5 minutes long. It includes 8 sound tracks and 10 royalty free style libraries with free templates, images and animations. Just go to www.powtoon.com to try it out.
Is it difficult to make a PowToon?
PowToon says that it’s “Easy & Intuitive.” I agree. They have lots of short tutorials and a free PDF you can download to help you get started. To put it in perspective, I would say that it’s easier to learn than PowerPoint or Prezi.
A few tips for getting started:
- Decide on your main message for the video and stick to it like glue.
- Pick a soundtrack you like and then make your video exactly the same length as the soundtrack.
- Try to keep your characters, colours and fonts consistent throughout the video.
- Keep your text simple and short.
- Watch Powtoon’s short video tutorials before you get started.
What do you think?
Are you going give it a try? If you do, please share your video link in the comments section below. Also, be sure to let me know if there is anything I could do to improve my first PowToon – the one I shared with you in this post.
Do you think that a Powtoon could help people land a job? It’s it a good tool for sharing your Employee Value Proposition. Maybe it’s just me, but I think “yes” and “yes”.
Have fun! I can’t wait to see your video.
